In this blog, I will be discussing why I closed my Shopify account which won't be a a long discussion
Why I opened an a shop?
I opened this shop in January of last year because I thought that small businesses/creators using Shopify were making a profit and thought I'd give it a shot.
I began creating these digital cassette tapes of book couples, only selling them for €8.23 ($9.57/£7.13). I thought that price was cheap enough and affordable, considering I was paying that amount myself to keep the shop running but no profit was being made and the balance on the card I was using wasn't always being topped up or receiving therequured amount to pay the subscription.
I had tried promoting it on my Instagram and Tiktok accounts but people were only liking the videos and I did gain followers from it, Im not gonna lie but it did not divert or capture the attention of potiential customers. I then decided on doing giveaways, sending dm's to my followers hoping that would make a difference, but it didnt and unfortunately it did make me question my decision on not only creating the shop but starting my book accounts as they weren't receiving the amount of interaction I was hoping for (it still isn't reaching those goals but I have decided to accept it and continue to post on social media for my own benefit) I also offered discount codes for the products to bring them down even cheaper (25-50%, sometimes it could've been 75%)
I tried to keep it afloat for months and on it's 5th month of being active. I made the decision to shut it down completely.
It did affect me personally and my social presence did decrease. I was close to deleting my social medias account, and it did also put me in a book slump for a good while.
My journey now
I did take time away from the book community (online at least) and did research for a different website but Google kept bringing me back to Shopify. I did try Etsy but that subscription didn't last long either
All the sites I signed up to had a "pro" upgrade option which I can't afford at this time without some sort of online traffic to my shop.
I am currently using Google Sites becuase:
1. It is directly linked to my gmail account and saves with every change (the only con to it at the moment is that I have to manually publish it)
2. It is completely free
3. You can easily upload images and select them straight from Google Images which helps design the book purchase pages much more fitting to the book and aesthetic.
I would greatly appreciate any feeback in the comments or send me a dm on my socials
Love ya!
